The vocals are of the clean variety, coming across almost like a chant or a yell. It's easy enough to trace some sort of progression here, Sabbath begat Vitus begat Dopesmoker, begat Dopethrone or something. From then on, we go back into the doom metal mire and continue all the way, with more rumbling, bleeding raw doom riffs, rolling lava crumble and pounding drums, into the ultra-doooomy "Invincible Throne", which points into an infinite series of more war adventures, more bloodshed and violence for goals that become no different from accumulating notches on a stick. It's such a tone-based album. That part where Hawk and Weapon breaks from it's slumber and begins it's lumbering gallop is truly glorious to behold!

Believe me this album will be receiving a lot of acclaim as it is truly an outstanding album of Sludge Metal that CONAN should rightly be proud of.
A stand-out track, if only because it has a solo drum tapping out a rhythm and a portentous two-note bass riff spelling out a tense atmosphere in which two opposed sides might be waiting for one to strike first, is "Golden Axe".

The guitar tone really defies belief; incredibly down tuned, really fuzzy yet still remarkably powerful. But here it is, and all herald conaj shape and shadow. Away they go, preparing for war with war-beat drums and military bass riffs, on "Hawk as Weapon", looking up at the bleak skies, riding into battle on, well, "Battle in the Swamp".
There's something astonishingly dense about this record; some credit is certainly due to the producer. How did these guys in Liverpool, way up north in the UK, know in that folks in southern hot-desert-like climes need music like theirs?

Again this suits the battle-like ritual atmosphere of the album; doom is coming: It's easy enough to trace some sort of progression here, Sabbath begat Vitus begat Dopesmoker, begat Dopethrone or something.

Conan are ones to watch — they pursue their doom with a lot of character, individuality and passion. Add top-notch vocals and what you have here is an amazing release by a superb band with a unique story to tell as well. Papyrus11June 19th, Newer Post Older Post Home. It's everything on this album.

Sabbath were louder, fuzzier, denser than, I dunno, Cream. In intense summer heat, there's nothing like listening to a massive heavy doom metal recording where the lyrics are sparse, almost primitive, and the fixation is on dumping out the thickest slabs of bass grind and guitar lava outflow, and the thumping loads of percussion to go conn it, to while away the time.
The riffs are played at a great mid-tempo to draw the listener in from start to finish. Pauses between the tracks stop this flow and it has to start all over again in the next track: You can buy this brilliant album in April Get this album as soon as you can.
It's certainly a stoner doom album but the closest monjos stoner doom album could get to drone while retaining it's moniker. They have been doing this for a long while and now its time for the world to open their eyes to CONAN.
That part where Hawk and Weapon breaks from it's slumber and begins it's lumbering gallop is truly glorious to behold! This is an album that both myself and Phil wholeheartedly recommend without any hesitation at all.

CONAN have released a string of acclaimed releases since their inception in Maybe some would like something more original, but personally this exactly where I want a doom band to be. Blogslot by The Sludgelord at There is something brutal, bleak and desperate in that sound, something that tells us of a post-industrial, post-apocalyptic world where people have to fight merely to survive.
Behold the next level.
NausikaDalazBlindazDecember monbos, There's something about this record that makes me want to do a huge amount of lifting and find a desert cliff to live on. That is what hits you first when listening to this album. The simplicity here breeds a power, directness and full-bloodedness not often heard, and Monnos is a great listen.
